Find your Chinese animal and element, plus the Moon phase you were born under. Free and instant.
Your Chinese zodiac animal follows the lunar new year, not 1 January. If you were born in January or early February, you may belong to the previous year's animal. This calculator uses the Chinese calendar date for your birthday, so it handles that for you. Each year also has an element (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water), which gives 60 combinations, such as "Metal Horse".
The Moon goes through eight phases every 29.5 days. In moon-phase astrology, the phase you were born under describes your natural way of approaching life:
| Birth Moon | Said to be |
|---|---|
| New Moon | A natural starter |
| Waxing Crescent | A builder |
| First Quarter | A doer |
| Waxing Gibbous | A perfecter |
| Full Moon | A connector |
| Waning Gibbous | A sharer |
| Last Quarter | A changer |
| Waning Crescent | A healer |
The Chinese year starts at lunar new year, between 21 January and 20 February. Birthdays before that date belong to the previous year's animal.
It is worked out for midday on your birth date, which is accurate except on the day the phase changes. ESO Socials uses your birth time for the exact phase.
Each Chinese year has one of five elements. Combined with the 12 animals, they make a 60-year cycle.
